Interactive Items
Few interactive items, one MG42 placement positioned on the first floor level of the building to the south overlooking the main square. Fallen roof timbers span two of the buildings; these can be used to move from one building to the other. There are a small number of doors that can be opened for access and several of the building interiors are linked by stairways and corridors.
Level Design
A crowded daylight setting, packed with partially destroyed buildings arranged in a rough perimter square. Many of the openings caused by the damage provide cover and an unobstructed view into other perimeter buildings. Move around and across the perimiter by negotiating passages and alleyways and the underground cellar that runs through the map east to west. The narrow passageways make minelaying an attractive proposition.
Synopsis

One of the smaller maps in the Breakthrough expansion, and one of the two included in the demo. Palermo can be an intense affair with a constant fight for control of several key points. Survival rates are low and you will find yourself having to respawn more often than normal, particularly the Axis - whose spawn area is very open and vulnerable to fire from some fairly well protected Allied positions. To be fair, this makes a change as it is usually the Allies who suffer in this way (e.g. Destroyed Village and Remagen).

Allied Objectives

TDM mode: As with all TDM fixtures the objective is to score as many kills as possible against the enemy.
Objective mode: To protect the documents contained within the locked strong room located on the top floor level of the three-level building (situated to the northwest of the map).

Axis Objectives
TDM mode: As with all TDM fixtures the objective is to score as many kills as possible against the enemy.
Objective mode: To retrieve the documents from the strong room, this can be expedited by setting the bomb fixed to the door of the strong room. Once blown the documents should be retrieved by operating the 'use' key (default 'E').
Tactics

Allies: Although the Allied spawn area is reasonably sheltered from the enemy, the exit to the central courtyard can be treacherous due to grenades. Fire can also be received from Axis players who have managed to infiltrate the upper floors of the nearby buildings.
Use the cellar entrance from the main square to outflank the Axis, though care must be taken when emerging from the narrow corridor as no cover from enemy fire is offered. A more favourable route is westwards via the alleyways, this will allow you access into the nearby buildings where there is plenty of cover and allows you full view of the Axis spawn area.
Axis: The Axis spawn area is a deadly killing zone; players who spawn in the main corridor will be exposed to enemy rifle and sniper fire and a constant deluge of grenades. This can make it difficult if not impossible to exit northwards into the courtyard area. Immediate action must be taken to protect yourself by entering one of the nearby rooms or exiting in a westward direction out into the alleyway or towards the cellar, this is the best option of the two but be cautious as you will still be open to attack.
Flanking manoeuvres can be made in a clockwise direction around the map using the many alleyways that lead, towards the enemy spawn area. Take advantage of access into these buildings to allow you to both orientate yourself and also look for opportunities for revenge!

In Short
A map which will lends itself to all weapon classes. Palermo is fast paced with plenty of kill opportunities for each side, though Axis players may are disadvantaged by a vulnerable spawn area.
Rating
Scores 8/10 as TDM and 8/10 as Obj.
