Design |
Kasserine Pass was a key point in the Allied offensive in
Tunisia in World War II. The pass was the scene of an Axis
breakthrough in February 1943, but was retaken by Allied forces
only days later. The game map is set in a sandy desert canyon,
with high, rocky cliffs surrounding the perimeter. Ridges
along the cliff sides give access to higher ground and there
is a crossable bridge arching between either side, guarded
by a bunker at each end.
Excavated into one cliff is a fuel refinery, which can be
entered through three tunnels. The tunnel at the north end
of the map is accessed by ascending a short ridge and crossing
a second, smaller bridge. Within the refinery, metal staircases
give access to high gangways. Across the canyon in a sheltered
cove stands a fuel depot, which can be accessed by several
routes, including via a tunnel from the canyon floor.

Synopsis
|
Almost
immediately the map splits into two battles – one for the
high ground and control of the main canyon area at the east
side of the map, and another for control of the fuel refinery
area towards the west side of the map.
The wide open areas and long distances favour rifle and sniper
players so these tend to dominate proceedings. A light desert
wind whips up sand from the ground limiting visibility, but
this doesn't impede game play much.
Axis players spawn at the south side of the map by a bunker
near one of the access tunnels to the fuel refinery. Allied
players spawn at the north side of the map by two trucks.
Both spawn zones are overlooked by high ground, which can
tempt opposition players to spawn-camp.

Tactics
|
General:
Familiarise yourself with the map to appreciate the the numerous
ways the opposition can reach a location, particularly outflanking
manoeuvres. Take advantage of the high ground around the map,
hiding behind rocks and sparse plant life to conceal your
position from the enemy and don't forget to make use of the
many bunkers and gun emplacements. Don't stand out in the
open for too long or it won't be long before an enemy sniper
or rifle player will score another kill. Be careful when attacking
players emerging from the sandy haze, as team avatars can
often be difficult to see and could result in a careless team
kill. Smoke and fragmentation grenades can be useful for breaking
out of tunnels blocked by enemy snipers.
ToW mode specific: Allied players must move quickly to secure
the fuel refinery and the bridge, as Axis players do not need
to destroy the Allied convoy to win the round. Allies should
take advantage of their immediate access to high gangways
in the fuel refinery to repel the Axis players advancing in
through the south entrance. Allies should also use the fixed
MG42 gun on the ground floor of the refinery to defend against
an Axis attack, but must be aware of Axis players flanking
them from the middle entrance.
Axis players can win the round quickly by switching on the
fuel refinery and destroying the bridge. When entering the
fuel refinery, players should consider ascending the staircase
nearest the Allies end of the refinery, which will allow a
surprise attack on Allied players entering through the north
tunnel. Axis players should remember to secure the fuel depot
to ensure a speedy victory.
Intelligent use of mines can halt enemy progress, and are
particularly useful for protecting the Axis bunker and the
Allied convoy. Don't forget to re-lay mines when they have
been detonated by the opposition. Counter the use of mines
by using grenades to clear the way before passing over ground
where mines may have been set.

Short
|
An
expansive map, Kasserine definitely favours long-range
weapons. Being picked off by an unseen enemy in this way can
be frustrating for some players, Depending on your style of
play you'll either love or hate it.
The ToW mode is unbalanced, being able to be won within seconds
by the Axis team if they act swiftly enough.
