Design |
Bologna was bombed heavily by Allied forces, and subsequently
retreating Axis forces during World War II. The game map is
set in the heart of the city around the two medieval towers;
Asinelli, the taller of the two, and Garisenda,
which leans slightly.
The tallest tower stands above an underground headquarters
room, which can be accessed via a staircase on the ground
floor tower and a hole in the floor of a building in the south-east
area of the map. A wooden staircase inside the tall tower
can be climbed to reach a terrace overlooking all parts of
an open square area, in which both towers stand. The square
is surrounded by buildings made of stone, many of which can
be occupied, and some of which have views out onto the open
square itself. A stone stairway leads from a side street to
a high walk way, which also has views onto the square.
At the north-west side of the map is a building featuring
an elegant cuspidal curved canopy. Adjacent to this building
is a winding side street with two MG42 gun placements, a wooden
cart and damaged car. This street leads to doors providing
access to some of the buildings.

Synopsis
|
Spawning can sometimes be erratic, so be prepared to find
opposition players close by. Generally, Axis players spawn
in and around the buildings toward the south-east side of
the map near the high walkway. Allied players spawn in and
around the buildings at the north-west side of the map near
the cuspidal curved canopy.
Most of the action tends to centre around the open square
and the many surrounding passageways. Skirmishes are often
fought to gain control of the high terrace, which provides
a good vantage point overlooking the square. This can be countered
by taking up first floor positions in adjacent buildings.
The map lends itself to allow weapon classes, but favours
rifle and machine gun players as opposed to snipers. The underground
headquarters is rarely used in TDM mode.

Tactics
|
General:
Move through buildings to provide safe passage across the
map. Use the upper floors of buildings, the terrace on the
tall tower or the high walkway to pick off opposition players
moving around below. Stay mobile whilst in open areas of the
map and use grenades to flush players out of buildings, or
to kill those on the terrace of the tall tower. Take shelter
from enemy gunfire in doorways and passages around the map
and use the numerous sheltered positions around the open square
to kill at distance. Snipers position themselves at the extremities
of the square in sheltered locations, where they can kill
opposition with little chance of being spotted.
Objective mode: Be ready for battle immediately upon spawning,
and as with all objective maps, move cautiously as you will
not be able to respawn. Axis players should be quick to take
positions where they can defend the underground headquarters;
in buildings or passageways overlooking entrances to the tall
tower and in the communications room itself. If it's necessary
to defuse any bombs set, either kill Allied players present
first, or ensure a team mate is close by to provide cover.
Due to the limited number of ways the underground headquarters
can be entered, Allied players should attempt to kill Axis
players before they are able to take defensive positions.
Allied players can make good use of smoke grenades to blanket
their approach into the underground headquarters room itself.
Bombs can be set at opposite corners of the communications
room, so attempt to plant both bombs to make it more difficult
for Axis players to successfully defuse them. There is only
one way out of the headquarters, so don't attempt to leave
until it's certain the bombs will destroy the headquarters.

Short
|
Visually,
a very pleasing map with interesting architecture and good
use of colours and textures. However, the sheer size of the
map means that there are many areas that don't see any action.
Objective mode seems an after-thought and doesn't provide
any degree of challenge.
